Scarabus is the name of a mystical place on the Scottish island of Islay and means 'a rocky place'. The Single Malt of the independent bottler Hunter Laing from Glasgow is named after this place. For the Batch Strength Edition, a small selection of casks is bottled with a higher alcohol content of 57% vol. The typical Islay profile of the whisky thus becomes even more intense and full-bodied.

The colour is pale gold, probably due to the ageing in second and third-fill ex-bourbon casks.
The nose is surprisingly fresh, with herbaceous and mint notes that push a gentle smokiness in the background. After some minutes in the glass and adding a few drops of water, the peaty and phenolic bonfire smoke comes back to the forefront, with the expected maritime notes (sea spray), brine and medicinal accents, all accompanied by citrus (lemon) and sweet yellow fruits (banana, apples).
In the mouth, it is a triumph of smoke and peat, but it always remains well-balanced with notes of spices, liquorice, toffee, malt, citrus, yellow fruits and vanilla. Slightly sweet and salty at the same time, it is very pleasant, and its profile closely resembles those of a young Caol Ila. The alcohol is not felt in all its strength.
The finish is long and sweet, of spices, leather, and warm ashes of a bonfire on the beach.
