Balcones Texas Single Malt is one of the few single malts from the USA. There, the specifications for Single Malt are less strict than for its Scottish counterparts. It may be matured for less than three years and may also contain grains other than barley. Pot Stills are also not primarily used; American whisky is often distilled continuously on patent or column stills. At Balcones, however, a conscious decision was made to have Pot Stills built by the well-known Scottish manufacturer Forsyths.

The smell and finish are great. The taste itself though, yuck. It has a funkyness that you also find in Appleton or Smith & Cross. Don't know if it's the specific bottle/batch or this is just what it tastes like. Rather rancid. Batch SM20-2, Bottle date 1-5-'21

Finish:
Comment: First thing on the nose is rich, semi-dried red fruits, cherries in particular, cherries stewed in rum, some brandy notes too. With some water the rum and brandy notes become a tad more pronounced and there is some malty-ness, red pepper corns, vanilla, fruit cake and a little mint.
Palate is also a rich red fruit bomb, not as sweet as the nose suggests, with oak notes. Water brings the sweetness out more.
Oak notes linger with spices arriving (nutmeg, red pepper again, a little cinnamon and subtle clove) and a minty-ness comes up the back of your throat. The finish also really hangs around.
Overall a really nice, unique tasting, complex spirit, I can strongly recommend!
