The Saint James distillery in Martinique has been producing rum since 1765, making it one of the oldest active rum distilleries on the island. Originally founded by Father Edmund Lefébure and initially known as 'Trou Vaillant', the rum was renamed 'Saint James' during the British occupation.

In 1882, the Marseille merchant Paulin Lambert introduced the characteristic square bottle. Although the volcanic eruption of Montagne Pelée in 1902 completely destroyed the town of Saint-Pierre, the Saint James distillery, which was only relocated from Saint-Pierre to Sainte-Marie when it was taken over by Cointreau in 1973, was only partially affected and resumed operations soon afterwards. Saint James has been part of the La Martiniquaise group since 2003.

You can find out more about the Saint James distillery in our YouTube video with insights from Benedikt Lüning.
