Product description
Matusalem Gran Reserva 15 Rum is made from sugar cane juice, which is fermented for 6-8 days. After distillation, it is matured for at least 15 years in American white oak bourbon barrels using the solera method. The solera system is originally a process for maturing sherry and takes its name from the Spanish 'solera', which means 'lying on the ground'. The oak barrels with a capacity of 520 litres are stacked on top of each other and around a third of the fully matured distillate is bottled from the bottom row. The partially emptied barrels are then filled with younger rum from the next row up until the top row is empty and filled with new distillate. The resulting mixture of old and young rums is known as blending. The rum originally comes from Cuba. However, when important employees and co-owners died unexpectedly, the company tried to gain a foothold in the USA and when this also proved unsuccessful, Claudio Àlvarez and Carmen Salazar gradually established their Ron Matusalem in the Dominican Republic with a great deal of commitment and perseverance. Ron Matusalem has been produced there since 2016.
