The Blue Spot Cask Strength is a triple-distilled Irish single Pot Still whiskey that has been matured for at least seven years in former Bourbon, sherry and Portuguese Madeira casks. For the use of Madeira casks, Mitchell & Sons refers to historical documents dating back to 1935, which show that Madeira wine casks were already being imported to Ireland at that time and used to mature whiskey after being emptied. Bottled at cask strength, this Blue Spot presents a combination of fruity notes combined with creamy spice and toasted wood. The name Blue Spot was taken from the innovative practice of the Mitchell family, who mark their aged whiskey casks with a coloured line to determine the age of the whiskey. The Blue Spot stands for seven-year-old whiskey, the Green Spot is aged for 10 years, the Yellow Spot for 12 years and the Red Spot for 15 years. The colour markings of the spot whiskey can be traced back to the early 1900s, when the wine and spirits merchant Mitchell & Son began maturing whiskey from the Jameson distillery in underground cellars in Dublin city centre, in Bow Street to be precise.
