Habitation Clément
The roots of the distillery, formerly known as Domaine de l'Acajou, go back to the 19th century, when the doctor and farmer Homère Clément cultivated sugar cane on his estate. The distillery was founded in 1917 and was continued by his son Charles Clément after Homère Clément's death in 1923. In 1973, Charles' sons Georges-Louis, Jean-José and Marcel-André followed in their father's footsteps.
In 1986, the Hayot family, who are close to the Clément family, took over the company and renamed the distillery Habitation Clément in honour of the original owner family. In 1988, the old distillery was closed due to dilapidation and converted into a museum. A notable event was the Franco-American summit in 1991, when Presidents Mitterrand and Bush visited the plantation. Habitation Clément has been a listed building since 1996 and the main house and outbuildings were extensively renovated in 2003.
